About the Project

VoterPal is a voter registration app created by Voto Latino, a non-profit whose mission is to empower the Latino community in the American democratic process. VoterPal is a tool that is meant to simplify the voter registration process for all U.S. citizens. VoterPal’s relieves the pain points associated with filling out a form on a mobile device. The registration process on the app makes it as quick and painless as possible, so no one gets discouraged from completing it.QR code scanning of a driver’s license simplifies the process of filling out the form, or you can fill out your basic information manually in minutes.

Solution

Hit send, and minutes later you receive a PDF with all your registration information filled in for you to print out and mail. VoterPal encourages individual users to register friends, and organizations can use the app’s Event Mode to keep count of how many people they’ve registered.

Integrating a QR code scanner into an app requires an intense amount of QA. In most cases, the information on a driver’s license was written down, then manually entered into a DMV computer. Everything in a QR code is taken from that process, so it’s essential to ensure that the flow of data is accurate, easy, and secure.

The registration process is nuanced, so there was a lot of creativity and thought that went into making VoterPal a visually rich experience with a lot of custom illustration.

Version 2.0 of the app was rebuilt using native iOS and Android tools (Swift and Kotlin), and integrates Mixpanel for analytics and push notifications. Push notifications are a strategic part of raising awareness about voter-centric events, helping to build a community that will outlast voting cycles.
