Springbox partnered with PanCAN to create an industry-first web application, the Clinical Trial Finder.

About the Project

The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network partnered with Springbox to build a tool that would tap into their expansive database of clinical trials, giving increased — and critical — access to patients and healthcare providers. Through optimization, we helped increase the tool’s conversion rate from 6.8% to 94.4%.

In 2010, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN) had an ambitious goal: to double the survival rate for the fourth-deadliest cancer by 2020. The organization maintained the largest database of clinical cancer trials in the world, but this information — which could provide cutting-edge treatment options — wasn’t easily accessible to the two audiences that needed it most: patients and healthcare providers.

Solution

Springbox partnered with PanCAN to create an industry-first web application, the Clinical Trial Finder. Following extensive user testing, we integrated a custom-built API with the database, provided robust filtering to narrow results and developed a complex caching system to reduce load times from 10 seconds to one. Springbox continues to work with PanCAN to optimize the tool. When conversion rates were lower than expected, we adjusted the user flow, giving providers access to more features before requiring them to create an account. This resulted in an increase of conversion from 7 to 94 percent. Today, the trial finder averages 5,000 users a month.
