Senator Gaylor Nelson was fed up. Not enough people seemed to care about environmental issues. The environmental movement was disjointed and, he felt, ineffective. And so, with the aim of creating concern that was “so large that it would shake the political establishment out of its lethargy,” he started the first Earth Day.

That was in 1970. Today, 50 years later, we still face environmental challenges and we still commemorate Earth Day.
